Drones Over America: What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Leave it to The Onion to satirize current feelings about drone technology in America. Taking a jab at concerns that domestic drone use is on the rise, the newspaper¬†offered the following headline on Monday: “Obama Begins Inauguration Festivities With Ceremonial Drone Flyover.”

On one hand, drones generate excitement among amateur builders and aerospace manufacturers alike because of the seemingly unlimited potential of such technology. However, drones are also decried among skeptical members of the public who believe the government may use them for purposes of monitoring and spying.

This week NOVA aired an hour-long (and ominously-titled special) called “Rise of the Drones” and examined how the military, the scientific community, and DIY makers have developed flying robot technology for their own means.

In a segment from WIRED, MIT Professor Missy Cummings offers a more positive opinion on drones, specifically the future impact they could have on commercial shipping and passenger air travel.
