Simpson, Bowles Warn Compromise is Needed to Avoid Fiscal Cliff

Journalists at this morning’s Monitor Breakfast got a chance to speak with former Senator Alan Simpson and former White House Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles, the co-chairs of the bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, on a budget deal that will prevent the U.S. government from going over the “fiscal cliff.”

Formed in 2010, the commission, which seeks to identify both medium and long term solutions for fiscal stability and sustainability, put everything on the table in a search for ways to reform government spending– from revenue increases to entitlement cuts.

Since then, Simpson and Bowles have continued to appeal to Washington politicians on finding a compromise for these pressing fiscal issues.

However, Bowles expressed worry that their calls for compromise have gone unheeded on Capitol Hill, and that there is a real danger a deal will not be met in time between Democrats and Republicans.
