It was an issue from last night’s debate that vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan was unable to avoid: the question of abortion. When moderator Martha Raddatz asked about whether or not pro-choice women should be worried about the legal status of abortion under a Romney administration, Ryan didn’t navigate around the question with the usual politicking– his body language said it all.
While it might seem like a major gaffe, especially in courting independent women voters, to Ryan’s credit he was sincere, forthright, and even unprompted in his views on the issue.
What the Obama campaign and Democratic activists intend to do with Ryan’s response remains to be seen, but it does bring the question of reproductive rights back into the spotlight. The following Commonwealth Club video features a discussion on the state of women’s health, teen pregnancies in particular, and the role the issue could play as we head toward the November election.
