Pe Lang: Simple Machines, Complex Motion, Beautiful Art

Dynamic beauty

We are often shielded from the inner works of technology and machinery in our everyday lives, even though the intricacies of how individual parts interact and work together is a fascinating concept– just think about the precise motion inside a timepiece that we see through a clear protective case. For Swiss artist Pe Lang, his work removes barriers and examines the relationship between machinery and motion.

Using two cube magnets, two gear motors, and 1,000 steel spheres measuring just 3 millimeters in diameter, Lang creates a seemingly complex art piece with very simple machines. Watch one the result of one particular work in the mesmerizing video below in a project titled moving objects | nº 68 – 79.
