New Yorker Festival 2012: Vampire Weekend and the School of Rock

Since emerging on to the indie rock scene in 2008 with their eponymously titled debut album, Vampire Weekend has enjoyed phenomenal success, including a position atop the Billboard 200 chart and a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album.

Formed in New York City at Columbia University by Ezra Koenig, Rostam Batmanglij, Chris Tomson and Chris Baio, Vampire Weekend has now become a staple in both iPods and at summer festivals such as Coachella, Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits. They have even caught the attention of President Barack Obama, who called on their support for his 2012 reelection campaign.

FORA.tv is livestreaming the Vampire Weekend talk with Atul Gawande on Saturday, October 6, at 10 P.M. EDT.

With a sound that blends African pop and American punk, Vampire Weekend lyrics are peppered with unique references ranging from summers on Cape Cod and sailing expeditions to the occasional dismissal of modern grammar rules, as seen in their 2008 hit single, “Oxford Comma.”
