Central to the plot of the comic Iron Man, billionaire playboy Tony Stark suffers a life-threatening injury during a kidnapping. To save his life and escape captivity, Stark uses his brilliant engineering skills to build an exoskeleton that later allows him to act as a superhero.
Though the abilities of the Iron Man suit lay more in fiction than in reality, several companies are developing exoskeletal technologies in order to help enhance the abilities of the human body. In the following video demonstration, Ekso Bionics co-founder Russ Angold shows how his company’s latest exoskeleton assists a paraplegic and offers him the chance to live outside the confines of a wheelchair.
