The Occupy movement marked its one year anniversary today, and protesters gathered again in Lower Manhattan in a call-to-arms to reignite the movement. Though it has fizzled as far as existing as a large-scale demonstration around the country, Occupy and it’s slogan “We are the 99%” still reverberate in the hearts and minds of many who sympathize with movement’s call for a democratic awakening.
What still galvanizes the movement are statistics like these that illuminate the ongoing trend of growing economic inequality in the United States, with activists claiming that traditional notions of democracy and capitalism have been held hostage by corporations and the top “1%” of earners in the country.
Richard D. Wolff, Professor of Economics Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts, describes how there is now widespread interest around the country in finding a way to create a capitalistic-based society that is both freer and fairer, and not controlled by minority interests.
