Captain “Sully” Sullenberger on Pilot Training, Leadership

Scary news out of Washington D.C. yesterday: three US Airways commuter jets carrying a total of 192 passengers came within seconds of a midair collision. The case is currently under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration, but it raises ongoing concerns about miscommunications between air traffic controllers and pilots, especially in our increasingly trafficked skies.

Captain Chelsey “Sully” Sullenberger knows a lot about communication and crisis avoidance. Famous for ditching his US Airways jet into the Hudson River back in 2009 after the plane’s engines were damaged by a birdstrike, Sullenberger is now an advocate for pilot training and safer skies. He joined a Commonwealth Club audience earlier this year to discuss lessons in leadership, heroism, and what is currently missing in pilot training.

Busy skies + miscommunication = scary scenarios.
