A New Way to Fly: 4,000 Miles Per Hour

The last time you flew on a jet, you traveled about 500 mph. Just imagine if you could go 4,000 mph. Tomorrow, DARPA, the Air Force, NASA, Boeing, and Pratt & Whitney will test their latest creation in jet travel, the X-51 Waverider. This unmanned hypersonic scramjet will be dropped from a B-52 at 50,000 feet over the Pacific.

“Experts hope the technology could revolutionize air travel on everything from missiles to manned aircraft” and could be “the next evolutionary step in human flight.”

This year at the Maker Faire in San Francisco, Nathan Wiedenman of DARPA explained why this important government agency cares so deeply about manufacuring innovative products.
