National Geographic Live: The Gadgets Behind the Photographs

From first underwater shots of a nursing humpback whale to remote controlled cameras that capture a vantage from a lion’s point of view, National Geographic photographers use a number of creative gizmos to capture the perfect shot, just like this remote controlled helicopter held by Michael Nichols in the Serengeti.

And those two examples are just a few of the amazing assortment of gadgets that National Geographic engineers build inside the Nat Geo Tech Lab. Eric Berkenpas and Mike Shepard, two design engineers in the remote engineering department explain how researchers, explorers and technicians collaborate to meet the needs of a project in the field.
