Tonight the Olympics kick off in all its glory and there are those who will be watching (or probably not watching) who will be disgusted by how commercial and corporate the event has become. In the next two weeks, they’ll be frustrated by the rampant nationalism the competition fosters. Where, they’ll wonder, are the good old days when the world came to together to celebrate amateur athletes in an understated, genuine way.
Veteran American sportswriter Frank Deford will be one of them. Back in 2008 Deford provided a litany of reasons why it’s time to retire the Olympic tradition, including the Olympic torch relay itself, which was started by the Nazis.
