Google Executive Marissa Mayer Named Yahoo! CEO

The troubled internet giant Yahoo! is about to get some help from one of its biggest competitors. Marissa Mayer, a former Google executive and one of the public faces of the company, has jumped ship and will head a few miles down the road from Mountain View to serve as the new Yahoo! CEO.

Mayer, who was Google’s first female engineer, updated her Google+ status with the news, and said: “I’m incredibly excited to start my new role at Yahoo! tomorrow” and followed up with a link to the official Yahoo! press release.

Among her most formidable tasks will be to do what ousted execs Carol Bartz and Scott Thompson could not: find a new strategic path that will help Yahoo! compete, or just co-exist, with the likes of Google and Facebook. Mayer spoke on Google’s foray into the hardware space at the Aspen Ideas Festival; can she lead Yahoo! to fill the gaps that are ignored or overlooked by other tech companies?
