Wanted: Intrepid Explorers for a One-Way Trip to Mars

Even though the United States doesn’t currently have a method for sending astronauts into space, other than piggybacking on Russian rockets out of the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, NASA is confident that a new era of manned space exploration is about to take place. In fact, NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden is confident we’ll land someone on Mars by 2030.

Based on that timeline, however, the United States could end up being beaten by a private Dutch company that seeks to establish the first human settlement on Mars by 2023. This isn’t science fiction folks: Mars One believe they have the technological know-how and potential backers to help pull off the first manned exploration and colonization of the Red Planet. Check out a preview video for the Mars One project below.

Science writer Mary Roach, author of Packing for Mars, is one of the ambassadors of Mars One. In the following clip, she talks about some of the common problems that face long-term space exploration missions, such as the art of using the bathroom in outer space.
