Scientists Say Earth is Approaching an Environmental Tipping Point

A startling report released this week by a group of the world’s most prominent biologists and ecologists said the strain on the Earth due to over-exploitation of fossil fuel resources and unchecked population growth could push our planet toward runaway destruction of our planet’s environment. According to a report in Nature via New York Times, we could be approaching a “planetary boundary” that could lead to mass extinctions and a degradation of our living existence.

While it’s certainly depressing news, it’s difficult to judge how global warming impacts us, especially when the majority of us look at our climate in terms of changing gradually from day to day, or season by season. According to Nature and prominent Bay Area planner Peter Calthorpe, the key to visualizing climate change is on a geologic timescale, and not on a human timescale.
