Last week we wrote on the strange connection between malaria and slavery, a subject highlighted in a lecture by science writer Charles Mann. In the program titled Living in the Homogenocene, Mann discusses the impact of European colonization in the 15th and 16th centuries and its later influence on the early American economy.
The following video short titled “Welcome to the Anthropocene” further examines human progress and expansion throughout the world, from the Industrial Revolution to the present day in a lead up to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in June, popularly known as Rio+20. Anthropocene (a synonym for homogenocene) relates to the human impact on the planet’s ecosystems.
