Celebrating 75 Years: What Did the Golden Gate Look Like Before the Bridge?

This Sunday the Golden Gate Bridge celebrates 75 years as one of the world’s most beautiful and iconic bridges. San Francisco is planning a big affair: bands, lectures, parties.

In 1937 construction began and the landscape of the San Francisco Bay Area  (and the world) would never been the same. Each year guerrilla archivist Rick Prelinger produces the Lost Landscapes of San Francisco, “an eclectic montage of rediscovered and rarely-seen film clips showing life, landscapes, labor and leisure in a vanished San Francisco.”

What did the Golden Gate look like before the bridge? How about soon after World War II? (Note the men in black suits … and where the hell is all the traffic?)
