The Internet began its life tethered to the desktop computer, but in the last few years, it’s shown real signs of going mobile. Smartphone shipments overtook PCs shipments for the first time in 2010. During the holiday shopping season, on Black Friday, mobile purchases surged to 9.8 percent of all online purchases from 3.2 percent in 2010.
