The Western press frames Iran’s push for nuclear weapons and its threatened closure of the Strait of Hormuz as primarily a conflict between the U.S. and Iran, but that misses the real point.
“What this view of the Middle East overlooks is the fact that both the United States and Iran are mired in internal political and economic difficulties,” according to a January 5 op-ed article, “In the Arab Spring, Watch Turkey” in the New York Times. “Simultaneously, inside the region, both are being outmaneuvered by an ascendant Turkey.”
