Next week the world – and the United States in particular – is thinking about how to best restore damaged ecosystems, how to refresh our sputtering economy, and how to keep a healthy perspective on it all. Here are the conferences to watch.
August 1-5 – 4th National Conference on Ecosystem Restoration
Bringing together professionals and lawmakers involved in and affected by all aspects of ecosystem restoration, this five-day conference will give scientists and researchers a chance to present their environmental findings to policy makers. Planners and legislators will, in turn, discuss their experience and results in large-scale ecosystem restoration, both national and international. The Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works), the Deputy Secretary of the Department of the Interior, and Maryland’s Governor and Senator will be in attendance.
August 4 – Barbara Desoer, President of Bank of America Home Loans
Speaking of restoration, Barbara Desoer’s had her hands full, trying to fix what’s broken at Bank of America. Named one of the “50 Most Powerful Women in Business” by Fortune magazine and one of the “25 Most Powerful Women in Banking” by U.S. Banker, Desoer takes the podium at the Commonwealth Club of California. With the latest economic reports showing slow, if any, growth, when will America finally pull itself out of the Great Recession? Bank of America played an important role in softening the blow of the Wall Street meltdown three years ago when it bought out of Countrywide. Billions of dollars later, B of A is still cleaning up legacy issues. Desoer will share her unique and valuable perspective on the future of the housing market, reforms, lending, foreclosure trends and housing recovery.
August 4-7 – 119th American Psychological Association Annual Convention
Perhaps more important than our issues with the environment or the economy are our feelings about them. In addition to its regular programming around such timely topics as immigration, racism, eating disorders and social networking, the APA’s 2011 convention will include a special session this year focusing on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Attendees will have the chance to network with fellow psychologists, listen to their peers’ research findings, and get involved in workshops aimed at enriching their practices.
