Best of 2010 Video Countdown No. 10: Famous Hacks at NASA

Whenever I tell someone that I work at FORA.tv, they’ll usually ask me, What’s your “best” video? Or they’ll want to know, What’s the most viewed? Or, What’s your “personal” favorite?

My answers to these questions change all the time… as we partner with more great organizations, as we add amazing video programs to the library, and as I watch, listen, and learn from our community — you — on our site, on Facebook, Twitter, Hulu, Boxee, and YouTube and all the places that smart people go to discuss and share comments about FORA.tv.

But come each December, we sit down, look back, and pick the year’s top videos: The Best of FORA.tv 2010. We choose 10 videos for the homepage, and 10 videos for each topic page: Economy, Environment, Politics, Technology, Science, Culture.  We select videos using measures both objective and subjective: view counts, embeds, shares, interactions and comments.

Beginning today and running through the New Year, we’ll unveil a top 10 video on our homepage and topic pages each day.

So, without further ado, we present the Number 10 video of 2010:

Keith Cowing: Famous Hacks at NASA

Keith Cowing talks about the kind of hacks made famous by the Apollo 13 mission, instances where the crew had to improvise using materials at hand. He discusses the following: Skylab Rescue – the umbrella used to replace solar insulation and boating tools bought at a local marina; Syncom Rescue – tools made out of plastic and duct tape; Apollo 13 CO2 removal, use of LEM engine, etc.; Apollo lunar rover fender repair; STS-120 EVA solar panel repair, and ISS camera tracker made from a power tool.
